Farmers say Alphonso crop on 1.5 lakh hectares destroyed
  • Farmers and their organisations in the Konkan region say Alphonso crop on 1.5 lakh hectares of land has been destroyed in the unseasonal rain in February and March. The government is yet to finish its assessment.
  • The Opposition Congress has accused the BJP-Shiv Sena government of neglecting Konkan farmers, and demanded a compensation of Rs. 4,000 a tree. “Farmers of Marathwada and Vidarbha were given a hefty package as compensation; then why are we being neglected? Despite having 23 MLAs from this region, the Sena and the BJP have failed to provide any relief,” Nitesh Rane, the party’s lone MLA from Konkan, said.

To ease smog in Paris, an 'odd' solution
  • After smog blocked out the view of the Eiffel Tower, authorities in Paris have announced that, at least for Monday, they will bar half of the city's drivers from the roads.
  • On March 21, air quality monitors predicted that concentrations of potentially dangerous particulates in the air could again go over the recommended maximum.
  • In Paris, authorities measure the concentration of particulates with a diameter of less than 10 microns -- so-called PM10 -- in the air to determine pollution levels.
  • These particulates are created by vehicles, heating and heavy industry, and include the most dangerous particles that measure less than 2.5 microns in diameter, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and the blood system and can cause cancer.
  • The safe limit for PM10 is set at 80 microgrammes per cubic metre (mcg/m3).
  • According to a 2011 World Health Organisation report, the planet’s most polluted city was Ahvaz in Iran with an average of 372 mcg/m3.
  • Beijing had an average of 121 mcg/m3, while Paris was measured at 38 mcg/m3.
Denying legal representation is unconstitutional: HC judge
  • “There are so many instances when bar associations and bar councils take a resolution that a particular crime is so heinous, so shocking to the conscience of society or nation that they would not represent a person accused of the crime. Such a resolution is per say unconstitutional, and cannot be taken,” Justice Joymalya Bagchi of Calcutta High Court said.
  • Referring to several judgments of the Supreme Court, Justice Bagchi emphasised that the right to legal aid and right to legal representation are ‘non-negotiable’, and these have to be given to the accused in order to ensure a fair trial.
